Programme Overview

We are a participating site to the NUHS Emergency Medicine Residency Programme. We welcomed our first batch of senior residents in the later half of 2016. They gained diverse educational experience with us and advanced their clinical as well as team management skills during their stint at NTFGH's Department of Emergency Medicine.

NTFGH's Emergency Department sees an average of almost 9,000 patients a month with a significant proportion of high acuity cases. We receive and tend to almost 70 ambulance cases every day. Our residents are actively involved in the hospital's operations during their attachments. They are the team leaders during medical or trauma resuscitation for patients. They manage a high volume of critically ill patients and learn to prioritise patient care in the process. They also help to identify system errors and implement potential system solutions.

During their time with NTFGH's Emergency Department, residents can participate in clinical attachments in various areas, such as the sports medicine clinic, and Intensive Care Unit, and participate in the SAFE (Sub-acute Ambulatory Care for the Functionally Challenged & Elderly) Programme which includes home visits to patients. SAFE is a home care programme targeted at the elderly in the community, supported by a multi-disciplinary team comprising a doctor, nurse, therapist, dietitian, pharmacist and social worker.

Our residents work in multi-disciplinary teams with the aim of improving patient safety and enhancing the quality of patient care, especially in the coordination of seamless care for patients transferring to the ICU or another hospital for further care. Transport emergency medicine is integral as residents have to optimise the patient's condition prior to transfer.

NTFGH's Emergency Medicine faculty consists of more than 20 senior attending physicians who are dedicated to mentoring residents. These faculty members are also involved in many Emergency Medicine and national programmes' teaching committees.

Other educational activities for residents include:

  • Emergency Medicine core conference
  • Clinical bedside teaching
  • Mortality rounds/case presentations
  • Peer-reviewed learning
  • Intensive Care Medicine combined teaching
  • Trauma combined teaching
  • Ultrasound shifts with direct faculty supervision
  • Clinical research projects
  • Toxicology teaching conference
