With 34 inpatient beds, the AMU provides medical care for patients from the Emergency Department who require short-term observation and treatment of less than 72 hours.
1. What is Ward B2 Acute Medical Unit (AMU)?
Ward B2 Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is a dedicated short-stay medical unit for patients who require less than 72 hours of inpatient care. Patients in the Emergency Department (ED) who require admission/observation for less than 72 hours will be admitted to the AMU. The AMU operates on a patient-centered open-ward concept with minimal physical barriers which enhances visibility and response time. A dedicated healthcare team will also provide round-the-clock care.

3. Who will be admitted to Ward B2 AMU?
Patients may be admitted if they:
- Need further medical care but are expected to stay less than 72 hours
- Are stable and do not require intensive care
- Admissions are based on assessment by our ED clinicians

4. What happens if a patient needs to stay beyond 72 hours?
If a patient requires extended medical attention, they will be transferred to a suitable inpatient ward.
5. Can a patient be discharged earlier than 72 hours if they recover quickly?
Yes. If a patient’s condition improves sooner than expected, our care team will arrange for an early discharge, ensuring they receive any necessary follow-up care.
6. What are the charges for staying in Ward B2 AMU?
Ward B2 AMU is a subsidised ward, and charges are in line with other subsidised inpatient wards. Patients may also use their insurance or government subsidies where applicable.
7. How are beds allocated in Ward B2 AMU?
Ward B2 AMU is a mixed-gender, open-ward concept inpatient ward, where patients are assigned beds based on availability. Patient privacy and confidentiality will be ensured throughout their stay.

10. Is the next of kin allowed to stay overnight in the ward?
No, overnight stays are not permitted.
11. Are meals available for patients?
Meals are provided for patients based on their medical needs and dietary requirements.
12. What will happen during discharge?
At point of discharge, patients will receive:
- A medical summary with follow-up instructions.
- Any prescribed medications will be collected at the Discharge Pharmacy near the Admissions & Business Office at Tower B, Level 2.
- Any necessary appointment bookings for follow-up care.
