Advanced Internal Medicine

Programme Overview

The Advanced Internal Medicine Senior Residency Programme at NTFGH forms part of the NUHS Senior Residency Programme, whereby senior residents are posted for two-month rotations.

There are three General Medicine teams at NTFGH, each led by a consultant. The case mix in General Medicine includes a broad range of medical conditions. NTFGH's acute model of care allows short-stay patients to be retained and discharged by the Acute Medicine teams. As such, the General Medicine teams only receive patients with complex conditions or those who are likely to stay in hospital for more than 48 hours.

One senior resident is attached to each of the three General Medicine teams. Apart from gaining experience in the day-to-day management of patients admitted under General Medicine, senior residents also handle medical referrals from other divisions such as General Surgery and Orthopaedics. They perform overnight on-call duties at least two to three times a month, attending to non-emergency cases. In addition, they supervise and mentor medical officers and house officers, and work closely with healthcare professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers on a regular basis. They also attend didactic teaching sessions, morbidity and mortality meetings and journal clubs, and undergo simulation training.

On the whole, the rotation in General Medicine equips senior residents to manage a wide range of medical conditions and develop the skills to practise holistically.
