Programme Overview

NTFGH's Cardiology service works in partnership with the National University Health System for the Cardiology Senior Residency Training Programme. Senior residents are rotated to NTFGH for training in general cardiology, where they put into practice optimal management of inpatients admitted with a wide spectrum of cardiac conditions.

Senior residents are treated as core members of NTFGH's cardiology team and are involved in the management of outpatients under the supervision of the faculty. They provide advice and support to other departments for patients with cardiac conditions. They also provide care to patients with emergent cardiac conditions who are admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. An integral part of the training includes the assessment of patients admitted to surgical departments, optimisation of pre-operative cardiac status and assessment of post-operative patients who develop cardiac complications. All these constitute an integral part of the training provided in NTFGH.

There is a strong commitment to both basic science and clinical teaching at NTFGH and we have an active postgraduate education programme. During rotation, senior residents are expected to attend ongoing teaching on a regular basis and also supervise and provide teaching to junior doctors and medical students attached to the cardiology team. Senior residents also coordinate a monthly journal club and are expected to give critical appraisals of recent publications pertaining to day-to-day practice in the journal club. Residents have ample time for consultant-lead clinical and surgical training and receive feedback on their performance.
