The Respiratory Medicine service provides inpatient and outpatient care for a wide spectrum of respiratory diseases. We commonly see patients with the following diagnostic problems in our specialist outpatient clinics:

Prolonged cough
Unexplained breathlessness
Cough with blood in the sputum
Abnormalities detected on routine chest X-rays

In addition, we assist primary care physicians to optimise management of the following lung diseases:

Asthma
Bronchiectasis
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Interstitial lung disease
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)
Pleural effusion
Pneumonia
Pneumothorax
Pulmonary tuberculosis

Services

Our Lung Function Laboratory provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic services:

Spirometry and flow loops
Lung volumes
Transfer factor
Bronchoprovocation test
Cardiopulmonary exercise test

Our Sleep Laboratory provides Sleep Medicine services such as:

In-lab sleep study
CPAP titration study
Multiple sleep latency testing

We perform the following procedures for inpatients and outpatients where appropriate:

Flexible bronchoscopy and appropriate biopsy, lavage, brushings
Pleural aspiration and drainage
Pleurodesis
Non-invasive ventilation (NIV)

We work closely with our physiotherapy colleagues to provide pulmonary rehabilitation programmes and our pharmacists who run smoking cessation programmes. In addition, we support our colleagues in Intensive Care Medicine through the management of critically ill patients who are on mechanical ventilation and NIV.
