Dr Aung Lwin graduated from the Institute of Medicine 2, Yangon, Myanmar in 1994. He completed postgraduate surgical training with a Master of Medical Science (Surgery) at the Institute of Medicine 1, Yangon, in 1999. He obtained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2002 and worked as a General Surgeon in Yangon General Hospital – the largest teaching tertiary hospital in Myanmar – till 2003. In 2008, he moved to Singapore and underwent Advanced Specialist Training in General Surgery. He achieved FAMS (General Surgery) and FRCS (General Surgery) in 2014.
Dr Aung joined JurongHealth Campus in 2011 and practised as a Registrar at Alexandra Hospital in the Department of Surgery. He was a part of the team setting up the General Surgery service for Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. In 2015, he did his fellowship in Bariatric Surgery at the Asia-Pacific Laparoscopic & Endoscopic Centre, Ming Sheng General Hospital, Taiwan. He acquired valuable experience in the comprehensive management of obesity and obesity-related diseases. He also acquired skills in a variety of bariatric surgical and endoscopic procedures during his fellowship under Professor Lee Wei Jei.
Currently, Dr Aung is a member of the Obesity & Metabolic Surgical Society, Singapore and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity & Metabolic Disorders. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.
Dr Aung has published several original scientific articles on bariatric and metabolic surgery in reputable medical journals. He has been a speaker at international conferences on bariatric and metabolic surgery such as the World Congress 2016 (IFSO), APMBSS Annual Congress 2016 (Asia-Pacific Metabolic & Bariatric Surgical Society) as well as the Bariatric Surgical Congress (OBES 2016), Singapore.
Apart from his clinical duties in the Department of Surgery at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, Dr Aung is also a Clinical Lecturer at Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. In addition, he is an Associate Programme Director for the National Postgraduate Year 1 training programme.
