Biosketch

"Breast surgery is a highly personalised field, where patients have the autonomy to decide on their choice of surgical treatment. My role, as a breast surgeon, is to walk with my patient in the journey of battling breast cancer and guide them through to the closure of their breast conditions. It is most rewarding to me when I see my patients return to normal life especially after breast cancer treatment. I strive to provide my patients with compassionate, evidence based, and equitable care."

Dr Lui Su Ann is a consultant in the Division of General Surgery with sub-specialty interest in Breast & Oncoplastic Surgery. She graduated from the University of Malaya, Malaysia in 2013. She joined the NUHS General Surgery Residency Programme in 2015 and served as the Chief Resident in the final year of residency.

During her programme, she obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2016 and the Master of Medicine (MMed (Surgery)) in 2018. In 2020, Dr Lui obtained her Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was accredited as a Specialist in General Surgery by the Specialist Accreditation Board.

Practice and Specialisation

Dr Lui's breast and surgical oncology practice covers benign breast diseases, breast cancer screening and detection, breast cancer evaluation, diagnosis, counselling, surgical management, and surveillance. Her specialisation includes surgeries for breast lumps, mastectomies and the whole range of oncoplastic breast conserving surgeries.

In addition to breast surgery, she also maintained her skills and expertise in general surgery and endoscopy. She was the alternate surgical champion of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project at Ng Teng Fong General hospital. She worked with the Surgical Clinical Reviewers to initiate quality improvement projects to improve quality of surgical care for patients based on reliable and clinically meaningful post-operative outcomes.

Nurturing the next generation of surgeons

Previously the Associate Programme Director of the Surgery in General Residency Program of NUHS in 2022, Dr Lui now contributes actively to the training of residents as the Core Faculty member of the General Surgery Residency Programme. She is also actively involved in undergraduate education by serving as a Clinical Lecturer for both Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine.

Translating research into practice

Dr Lui is also actively involved in research on breast cancers and benign breast conditions. After completion of her surgical training in 2020, she acquired a research degree (Master of Clinical Investigation) from the National University of Singapore in 2022. She is currently leading a clinical trial on the effectiveness of a haemostatic agent in the prevention of seroma post mastectomy, in hopes to facilitate early drain removal after surgery.
